  • Golf Course Update from Jim McKenzie - Director of Golf Courses & Estates Management

Well what a year 2021 has turned out to be.

We started 2021 pretty much in lockdown with all golf operations closed down and with less than 50% of golf course staff operating in all areas.

We did however due to the lack of play and no requirement for daily set up , manage to catch up on some of the agronomic details that we were not in a position to do in 2020.

Again, as in previous years we have been guided to a certain extend by the strange and ever changing weather patterns.

April 2021 was the driest and coldest April on record with little or no potential for growth or recovery from winter damage such as disease and physical damage caused by birds hunting below the grass sward for pests that thrive in turf grass and soil – particularly post the banning of fungicides and pesticides historically used in these circumstances.

May then also became a record weather month in terms of rainfall – we had officially become the wettest May on record on May 17th with two weeks of wet weather to follow.

Summer 2021 was a good period for us with a mixture of wet and dry weather in equal measures and the potential for fine growing conditions and of course playing conditions.

Late autumn and early winter has seen us concentrating on the renovation of greenside bunkers on The Montgomerie Course - to date we have removed the contaminated sand, refreshed the drainage and re sanded about 75 % of the total.

The plan is to complete all greenside bunkers during the winter and to complete the harder to get to fairway bunkers in spring 2022 ensuring a consistent set of bunkers for the next few years.

Bunkers also remain the focus on The 2010 Course with the target to renovate all greenside bunkers by the end of 2023.

This involves making them significantly smaller, installing non - gravel drainage and installing a geo textile liner.

The installation of the liner prevents wash off from the faces, thus the contamination of the sand leading to poor drainage capabilities.

So far this winter we have renovated the greenside bunker on hole number 2 and two bunkers on number 10.

We intend to do some of the easier to get to bunkers during this winter and a couple of the larger ones in the spring.

Spring 2021 saw a few bunkers renovated on The Roman Rd and we will be focusing on this upon completion of The Montgomerie Course.

Winter 2021 has again been usual from a weather point of view with a very wet October followed by a very dry November.

Several members have mentioned, how green the fairways have looked this winter, which, has been down to the fact that they have had a chance to dry out. When soil is wet the pore spaces in the soil which should be full of air to help the grass plant breath, are full of water – effectively depriving the plant the opportunity to breath.

We have recently taken delivery of a couple on new pieces of equipment to assist with fairway playing conditions when wet and we are looking forward to utilising these.

2021 also saw the installation of some secondary drainage on the 2010 Course, which, has recovered very well. We are, monitoring the effectiveness, very closely and it is, expected that we will carry out some more in 2022.

A particular cause for concern in all golf clubs and resorts is the ever -increasing use of power trollies in the wet winter months.

Damage and compaction in fairway areas is becoming a real issue as they travel on soft wet fairways churning up muddy areas and further increasing compaction levels - ultimately compromising the ability to drain and providing unsatisfactory playing conditions for others.

Many golf publications, including Golf Monthly this week have carried articles on why you should carry in the winter.

Personally, I now carry 9 clubs in the winter - odd irons one week and even irons the next time.

It is more enjoyable, you vary your walking pattern around greens and tees and it will make you a better player in the longer terms as you learn how to manipulate your shots.

Please, give it a go – you will not be disappointed and you will be contributing to the well- being of the golf course.

Whilst, given the current circumstances it is difficult to predict the schedule of works on the golf courses over the next month or two we will be doing our utmost to get through as much of the typical late winter/early spring projects, including greens renovations as we can to ensure positive playing conditions for 2022.

I would like to thank you all for your continued support and look forward to catching up with as many members as possible during 2022.

    Jim McKenzie MBE

  • Member Magic Moments

We are delighted to share with you that one of our newest Twenty Ten members, Daniel Doherty successfully achieved a hole in one on the 17th hole of the Twenty Ten when playing in the Team of 3 or 4 Christmas Texas Scramble competition. It was Daniel’s first hole in one and according to those he played with, looked in all of the way. Congratulations Daniel from all of the golf team at the Resort.

  • Face coverings in golf clubs

It has become more apparent in recent weeks that the compulsory wearing of face masks whilst moving around the facilities have been less compliant as previously experienced. We would like to take this opportunity again to remind all members that we DO require all members and guests to wear face masks under Welsh legislation and we will be closely monitoring this moving forward. Please ensure this is a focus and requested wearing of face masks are happening where applicable. It is important that we look after ourselves and each other and we thank you for your understanding and compliance in this matter.
