New names waltz in for Celebrity Cup
Strictly Come Dancing star Anton du Beke and Irish comedian Brendan O’Carroll, better known as the title character in TV sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys, are among the latest star names announced for the Celebrity Cup presented by Bulmers.
Professional dancer du Beke will swap the foxtrot for the fairways when he makes his debut in this year’s tournament at the Celtic Manor Resort from July 9-10.
A keen golfer, he said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have been invited to play for Team England in the Celebrity Cup at Celtic Manor. I love golf and play in as many pro-ams and celebrity golf days as my schedule will allow, but it’s a real honour to be asked to play for your country.
“People who have played in the Celebrity Cup before tell me it’s a lot of fun and I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
O’Carroll has created a worldwide comedy hit with his foul-mouthed mother in the award-winning Mrs Brown’s Boys. The Irishman returns to the event after entertaining the crowds and distracting his opponents with his cheeky banter in the 2014 competition.
Reflecting on that experience, he said: “I play in charity golf events all over the world and this has been the best organised tournament and the warmest welcome I’ve ever had.”
He will be guaranteed another warm welcome not just from the spectators but also from the party-loving Irish team which once again features Keith Duffy, Brian McFadden and Brian Ormond.
The Celebrity Cup presented by Bulmers pits teams of six celebrities from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales against each other on the Roman Road golf course. Last year Wales, inspired by a stunning debut from Real Madrid soccer superstar Gareth Bale, won the trophy for the first time.
Actor and comedian Rob Brydon returns to captain the home side and welcomes Wales rugby legend and TV pundit Jonathan Davies to his ranks for the first time.
Du Beke will be reunited with former Strictly contestant Denise van Outen in the England side which is completed by captain Mike Tindall, Ben Shephard, Zoe Hardman and Peter Jones.
Returning to the Scotland ranks will be Hollywood actor Dougray Scott and he will be joined by rugby star turned Strictly heart-throb Thom Evans, his brother Max Evans, who still plays in the Six Nations, and former captain Rory Lawson.
The final names to complete the 2016 Celebrity Cup line-up will be announced shortly. Thousands of golf fans and celebrity spotters flocked to Celtic Manor in the sunshine to watch the stars up close last July when Wales, inspired by a stunning debut from Real Madrid soccer superstar Gareth Bale, won the trophy for the first time.
As well as top-notch golfing action and on and off-course banter, there will be live music and food and bar outlets in the tented village and the opportunity to “Get Into Golf” in an interactive zone sponsored by Principality Building Society.
Visitors can also experience the VIP treatment in Hospitality or the Premier Lounge.
