Cooking up something new

11 June 2018

We’ve got an exciting summer of events coming up with Polo at the Manor this Saturday and the Celebrity Cup just a couple of weeks later.

Sandwiched between the two, we have an exciting new culinary venture to sink our teeth into – a pop-up restaurant with a difference when we bring the Grub Kitchen to our Newbridge on Usk country inn.

For those who have not heard, Grub Kitchen is the UK’s first dedicated insect restaurant set up in Pembrokeshire by chef Andy Holcroft and insect scientist Dr Sarah Beynon. We first met Andy and Sarah when they introduced their edible insects to us as part of their filming for a BBC documentary, ‘The Bug Grub Couple’.

Insects on the menu might sound like a novelty but Andy and Sarah are passionate about their nutritional value and their importance as a sustainable food source. They hope to convert western taste buds to a way of eating which is commonplace in many parts of the world including Africa, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico and Columbia.

That’s why we have formed a partnership to help them spread the word during National Insect Week with our limited edition dining experience at the Newbridge Grub Kitchen from Thursday 21st June – Saturday 23rd June.

Insect delicacies on the pop-up menu include curried cricket pakora, toasted cumin and mealworm houmous, bug burger bites and garlic chapuline grasshoppers, and there will even be desserts like caramelised cricket panna cotta and toasted mealworm crepes.

I’m looking forward to trying something completely different but if you have less adventurous dining tastes, we have many more brand new summer dining events to whet your appetite.

One of the great things about having seven restaurants at the resort is that we have plenty of options if we want to mix things up a little with special menus. We recognise people are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their dining habits and are always keen to try something new.

So we’ll be crossing the globe with a calendar of dining events for summer and autumn from American Independence Day in Rafters on 4th July, to British Game Week in the Newbridge from 24th - 29th November.

Afternoon tea has been a real success story for the resort for several years now and one of the reasons it’s proved so popular is that it keeps evolving with seasonal menus and new innovations from our talented team of chefs.

Every Saturday at Coldra Court, you can now try a Slider afternoon tea drawing on the southern smokehouse flavours of The Rib restaurant, and this month we have launched an Asian afternoon tea in Cen. The perfect treat for a special occasion, afternoon tea has become a real institution at Celtic Manor and it’s great to be able to keep our offering fresh with so many different options.

From bugs to bao buns, you’re sure to find something in our wide variety of dining events to tempt you. Or just take advantage of these balmy summer evenings we’ve been enjoying to sample our new al fresco menus in the scenic setting of the riverbank at the Newbridge on Usk, or the golf course views at The Grill.

Summer is always a great time to visit the resort and we’re looking forward to another very busy season, welcoming guests old and new to our restaurants and events.
