Art at Terry M

We are thrilled to be showcasing pieces of work by celebrated artists Emrys Williams and Christopher Langley.

Emrys Williams

Born in Liverpool in 1958, Emrys Williams moved with his family to Colwyn Bay in 1969. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London (1976-1980) and has won a number of major prizes in Wales including the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod (2007).

His work is represented in many major public collections including the Government Art Collection, the Arts Council of England, the National Museum of Wales and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Williams’ oil paintings explore ideas of memory and imagination through images of the sea and still life. The work suggests moments of reverie and contemplation in seascapes that are mysterious and evocative, while his still life paintings combine the traditional elements of flowers or fruit juxtaposed with model boats or a model castle, creating imaginary journeys in the mind of the viewer.

Christopher Langley

Langley was born in the Welsh market town of Pontypridd in 1962.  After successful experimentation and an evolution lasting many years, the core of his work pushes the boundaries between formalism and logic, making abstract painting look enviably effortless.

Some of his canvases reflect a unique approach, conceiving painting as something intrinsically abstract with a sense of texture that resolves from an intimately hands-on conception of styles.  Some of his paintings are not formally apologetic bending the knees to an illusion of the past, while others, such as ‘Huts in Yellow and Black’ and ‘Embankment' portray familiar scenes presented in unusual aspects and colours.
