The Celtic Manor Resort has announced a record year for leisure visitor numbers as it prepares for an even bigger upturn in 2010 when it hosts Wales’ first Ryder Cup.

The five-star resort in South Wales bucked the trend of economic recession by selling 20,000 more room nights to leisure visitors in 2009 than it did in 2008. It also saw revenues increase significantly across its golf, spa and restaurant outlets.

The massive upturn resulted from a combination of Celtic Manor’s increased international profile because of the Ryder Cup and a new leisure strategy to compensate for the global downturn in corporate and conference business.

Rounds on its flagship Twenty Ten Course by visiting golfers were almost doubled on the year before and 81 per cent of all the available visitor tee times were booked out.

Other comparisons from 2008 saw:

• An additional 22,000 rounds played on the three championship golf courses

• Golf visitor green fee income up by 58 per cent

• A 45 per cent increase in overseas visitors

• Overall room occupancy up by 8 per cent, despite the downturn in conference business

• Bar and restaurant revenue up by 26 per cent to record levels

• Spa revenue up by 18 per cent

Golf and leisure bookings already look strong again for 2010 and corporate and individual memberships for the Twenty Ten Club have grown as people join to receive Ryder Cup season tickets, a membership benefit which expires in March.

Celtic Manor vice-president of operations Ian Edwards said: “Things did not look great at the start of last year as we steeled ourselves for the inevitable shortfall in corporate business as the recession took hold.

“Having been voted the UK’s Top Conference Hotel in three of the last four years, this has always been a very important market to us. But the grim forecasts galvanized us to focus more of our energies on the leisure market and improving our appeal to families.

“The strategy has included offering a number of different packages to attract a range of markets including groups of golfers and families. This has brought our overall room occupancy up to record levels, while the golf courses, bars and restaurants have never been busier.”

As well as golf, leisure facilities at Celtic Manor have always included luxury spa, kids’ club and crèche, tennis courts and mountain biking and walking trails, not to mention the choice of five different restaurants to offer something for the whole family. A new family games room and the appointment of a guest activities manager increased the leisure offering still further in 2009, when special offers included three nights for the price of two during the school holidays.

Plans for 2010 include the improvement of bedrooms and many public areas in the Resort Hotel in readiness for The Ryder Cup. Flat screen TVs will be installed in every bedroom and the Olive Tree restaurant and Rooftop Garden barbecue terrace will both be expanded.

“We expect to welcome even more visitors in 2010 as the Ryder Cup draws ever closer,” added Mr Edwards.

“This is a very exciting time for the resort and it’s great to be going into this landmark year with the momentum of so much success in 2009 behind us.”

Celtic Manor Appoints Buffalo Communications

The Celtic Manor Resort - host of golf’s 2010 Ryder Cup and Wales’ premier luxury retreat – has appointed a US public relations agency to create and implement a comprehensive publicity programme in North America.

Buffalo Communications, based near Washington DC, will leverage the Ryder Cup (October 1-3) to showcase the resort’s five-star facilities and services, including its three outstanding golf courses, and build on growing interest from overseas visitors.

A popular destination among golf tour operators and corporate incentive agents, Celtic Manor will also benefit from Buffalo’s connections and programme development with travel providers.

Nestled in the verdant Welsh hills, Celtic Manor features extensive amenities for golf, business and leisure travellers. Foremost are its three golf courses:

The Twenty Ten – first in history designed and built specifically to host the Ryder Cup

The Roman Road – Robert Trent Jones, Sr-designed home to the Celtic Manor Wales Open on the European Tour (2005-07)

The Montgomerie – designed by the European 2010 Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie

Two lavish hotels, tranquil spas and state-of-the-art health clubs; five restaurants; a shooting school; a golf academy and miles of scenic trails for mountain biking and nature hikes are highlights at Celtic Manor.

With a convention centre, exhibition hall and an array of well-appointed suites, meeting rooms and large ballrooms, Celtic Manor hosts groups up to 1,500 for conferences, weddings and other special events.

“Celtic Manor offers something for every discerning traveller,” says Dylan Matthews, Chief Executive of Celtic Manor. “The Ryder Cup has really put us on the map as a golf destination, and players from all over the world are enjoying our Twenty Ten course and the resort’s other facilities.

“The Twenty Ten course remains open for visitor play throughout the summer of 2010, and we look forward to working with Buffalo Communications in welcoming even more golf travellers from North America as the Ryder Cup approaches.”

Rich Katz, Managing Director of Buffalo, said: “The experience of Celtic Manor and its championship golf is exhilarating. We’re excited to partner with Celtic Manor to cement its ‘preferred-destination’ status and advance revenue goals – before, during and after the Ryder Cup.”

The resort will continue to work with London-based Four Communications for public relations in the UK and Europe as it seeks to maximise publicity in Ryder Cup year.

The resort was voted the UK’s Top Conference Hotel four of the last five years by readers of Conference & Incentive Travel magazine. World Travel Awards, Clubhouse Magazine, Golf Punk and other media also ranked Celtic Manor the top resort and golf destination in Wales and the UK, contributing to its selection as host of the 2005 EU Foreign Ministers Summit.

More recently, Celtic Manor played host to the 2009 PGA Magazine Ambassadors’ Program and the KPMG Golf Business Forum for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, at which Arnold Palmer was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The resort beat rival bids from Scotland and England to bring the Ryder Cup to Wales for the first time in 2010. Since landing the award in 2001, it has invested £16 million to build the new Twenty Ten course, clubhouse and surrounding infrastructure.

The resort is privately owned by founder Sir Terry Matthews, the Ottawa, Canada-based telecommunications entrepreneur, who was born on the Celtic Manor site when the original Manor House was a maternity hospital.

Welsh Hotel Tops Conference Poll Again

The Celtic Manor Resort has emerged from a difficult year for the entire corporate business sector with another top award for the quality of its conference facilities and service.

The five-star resort in South Wales, which will host golf’s prestigious Ryder Cup in 2010, has been voted the UK’s Best Conference Hotel by industry experts for the fourth time in the last five years.

Having picked up Conference & Incentive Travel magazine’s Top UK Conference Hotel prize in 2005, 2007 and 2008, Celtic Manor has now collected the gold award in the same publication’s inaugural Hot List awards for 2009.

A record year for leisure business has helped the resort battle the economic downturn which has hit the corporate events industry, but this latest award shows that Celtic Manor’s reputation remains unaffected as the leading venue for hosting conferences in Great Britain.

With 400 bedrooms in two hotels, a large and versatile convention centre, three championship golf courses, five restaurants, two luxurious spas and health clubs as well as a host of other activities, The Celtic Manor Resort occupies a unique position in the marketplace.

The venue beat off some strong competition for the prize with London’s Riverbank Park Plaza taking the silver award and The Grove in Hertfordshire claiming bronze.

Explaining Celtic Manor’s success, the magazine commented: “Already established as one of the UK’s leading conference properties, it will strengthen these bonds still further when it hosts the Ryder Cup next year on its spanking new Twenty Ten course, designed and built for the biennial event.”

Celtic Manor Business Development Director Jill Manley said: “We are delighted to have once again been voted the UK’s favourite conference hotel.

“It is particularly satisfying that this accolade comes from the readers of Conference & Incentive Travel, many of whom are the executives who plan and arrange conventions for some of the biggest blue chip companies.

“The award is a reflection not only of the excellent facilities at The Celtic Manor Resort but also the dedication to customer service of our entire staff.”

The resort’s convention centre – one of the largest hotel facilities of its kind in Europe – houses the Caernarfon Suite which can seat 1,500 delegates for a keynote lecture or 800 dining guests for a gala dinner. An additional 31 syndicate and meeting rooms with break-out areas can cater for every event from a small meeting around a table to large presentations for hundreds of people.

The venue was also voted Wales’ Leading Hotel and Wales’ Leading Golf Resort at the 2009 World Travel Awards.

Crown Chef Serves Up Feast Fit For Kings

Michelin-starred chef James Sommerin will cook up fine-dining on a grand scale when he leads a team of chefs at The Celtic Manor Resort preparing a banquet to celebrate a year to go until The 2010 Ryder Cup.

Sommerin, Executive Head Chef at The Crown restaurants at Celtic Manor and Whitebrook, will be cooking for rival Ryder Cup captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin, celebrities and Ryder Cup officials among a total of 660 guests at the gala dinner.

He will lead a team of no fewer than 30 chefs from Celtic Manor and The Crown at Whitebrook as he seeks to provide a fine-dining experience for the vast audience. The Year To Go Dinner takes place in the opulent Caernarfon Ballroom at The Celtic Manor Resort on Monday October 12 and entertainment includes singing from Bryn Terfel.

For Sommerin, who won a coveted Michelin Star at The Crown at Whitebrook in 2007 and retained it in 2008 and 2009, the dinner will be a different sort of challenge.

He said: “I’ve cooked for some prestigious occasions and some important people in the past but this is the first time I’ve cooked for so many people.

“Fortunately, I’ve got a highly talented team of chefs working with me and The Celtic Manor Resort is very experienced in catering for events of this size.

“But I want this to be fine-dining on a grand scale. I want the guests to finish the evening feeling wowed by the quality of the food.”

The four-course gourmet menu, based on Sommerin’s dishes as a finalist in this summer’s Great British Menu on BBC 2, certainly reflects his aspirations.

The starter is poached and roast chicken with a liquid pea ravioli while the main course features sirloin of beef, braised brisket and smoked butternut squash. A dessert of autumn berry trifle is followed by a selection of Welsh cheeses.

As well as his accolades at The Crown at Whitebrook, Sommerin also helped The Crown at Celtic Manor to achieve three AA rosettes within a year of its opening, and continues to grow the reputation of both restaurants in the vibrant Gwent culinary scene.

During the dinner, Ryder Cup captains Montgomerie and Pavin will be quizzed by Radio 2 broadcaster Chris Evans who will also compere chats with Sir Terry Matthews, owner of The Celtic Manor Resort, and George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour.

Other guests at the VIP dinner include past Ryder Cup captains Sam Torrance, Bernhard Langer and Tony Jacklin, French rugby legend Jean Pierre Rives, Dutch soccer great Ruud Gullit and officials from Ryder Cup Europe and the PGA of America.

The 2010 Ryder Cup takes place from October 1-3 at The Celtic Manor Resort and will be the biggest sporting event ever staged in Wales.

One Year To Go

Holly Jones is a girl with a lot to look forward to as she approaches her first birthday later this month. Meanwhile, her father, Gareth Rees Jones, Marketing Director at The Celtic Manor Resort, joins many others in Wales, considering another first and reflecting where we’ll all be exactly a year from now – on 1st October 2010 – when The Ryder Cup is played in Wales for the very first time.

Father and daughter were joined on the first tee - where else? - of the purpose-built Twenty Ten Course by many more of the key participants in The 2010 Ryder Cup to celebrate the countdown to next year’s event.

For Holly, obviously, next year will be her first Ryder Cup, although she’s hardly in a position to appreciate the importance of the occasion! For everyone else in Wales, however, the magnitude of welcoming the world’s biggest team golf event to our shores is well understood and it will be a first for all of us: From the residents of host city, Newport, to the green keepers at The Celtic Manor Resort, from the hoteliers across Wales who are preparing to provide a warm Welsh welcome for the tens of thousands of visitors attending the tournament, to the volunteers, guides and marshals who will help out on and around the course, October 2010 will be a monumental milestone and will put Wales very firmly in the global spotlight.

It will be the first time Wales has hosted an event with this level of global profile and the excitement is mounting.

Celtic Manor’s Director of Golf Courses, Jim McKenzie, said: “I’ve had the privilege of working on some large European Tour events here at Celtic Manor and at Wentworth Club but The Ryder Cup is going to be the highlight of my professional career.

“I’ve been to all of the Ryder Cups over the last decade or so and had a good look behind the scenes as a fact-finding exercise at the last few, but this will be very much a first for me in terms of preparing a golf course for a tournament of this stature.

“It’s only once every four years that a venue on this side of the Atlantic gets to host The Ryder Cup so it’s a rare privilege and an honour. The eyes of the world will be upon us and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t just a little bit nervous about the whole thing, but I’d be in the wrong job if I wasn’t looking forward to the challenge.

“Next year is the culmination of a lot of hard work put in by a lot of people over the 16 years I’ve been working at The Celtic Manor Resort. And, of course, the drive and determination of our owner, Sir Terry Matthews, whose vision made the whole thing possible in the first place.”

While McKenzie is still working with Colin Montgomerie on the course set-up and some minor tweaks the European Captain has recommended for the tournament, The Celtic Manor Resort puts the last major piece of construction into place this autumn with the completion of a £2m bridge over the River Usk to transport players and spectators to the new Ryder Cup practice ground.

Remarking on the importance to Wales of this event, Andrew Davies AM, Minister for Finance and Public Service Delivery, said: “The Ryder Cup is one of the world’s largest sporting events, and hosting it will give Wales a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to promote itself on the word stage. As well as the economic activity surrounding the event itself, it will raise Wales’ profile globally and help attract investment in the future.

Elaborating on the notion of “Our First Ryder Cup” Mr Davies explained: “The extent to which this is an important first for Wales cannot be overstated. We are to be host nation for one of the world’s most exciting sporting occasions and association with the event gives us the opportunity to develop some new marketing material that will help us raise the profile of Wales – both as a place to do business and as a place to visit.

“Through our marketing and brand activity, we need to use the opportunity to enhance Wales’ external reputation and to build a sense of occasion within Wales. “Our First Ryder Cup” is one way of showing how the event will touch lots of people throughout Wales and will help to build a sense of anticipation. The personal stories we develop will form part of website content and wider communication over the coming months.”

The nation won the right to host the event back in 2001 and since then both the private and public sector have been working to ensure that the whole of Wales benefits from hosting one of the largest sporting events in the world. The arrival in Wales of The 2010 Ryder Cup in a year’s time represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put Wales on the map.

Anticipating the next 12 months, Chairman of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd. John Jermine said: "Since winning the bid Wales has become a recognised international golfing destination and these next 12 months will help us build our reputation for great golf and hospitality attracting new visitors to Wales for years to come. We look forward to showing all of our guests "Golf as it Should be" that will guarantee them golfing memories to be treasured."

Explaining the on-going work to stage the event, Ryder Cup Director, Richard Hills, said: “We continue to be extremely impressed by the huge commitment being made by everyone at The Celtic Manor Resort. Sir Terry’s vision gave birth to a dream and seeing that dream move towards reality is a joy for all involved. There is only one year to go now and we know that all of Wales will have good reason to feel very proud when The 2010 Ryder Cup begins on October 1 next year.”

Councillor Matthew Evans, Leader of Newport City Council, added: "The next 12 months promise to be among the most memorable in Newport's modern history and a once in a lifetime opportunity to raise our profile on a global stage and get people feeling good about the city.

“Hosting an event on the scale of the Ryder Cup is something many people thought could never happen in a town or city like Newport. The fact that we are now just a year away from hosting one of the world's most prestigious sporting events is something that should give everyone connected with Newport, a huge amount of pride in our city.”

"I’ve been to all of the Ryder Cups over the last decade or so and had a good look behind the scenes as a fact-finding exercise at the last few, but this will be very much a first for me in terms of preparing a golf course for a tournament of this stature.
"It’s only once every four years that a venue on this side of the Atlantic gets to host The Ryder Cup so it’s a rare privilege and an honour.
The Celtic Manor Resort is putting the finishing touches to a vast new bridge over the River Usk as the final major piece of construction for next year’s Ryder Cup.

The 120-metre long, 14-foot wide, cable stayed bridge will transport players and spectators to a new practice ground for The Ryder Cup which tees off a year from now on October 1, 2010.

The £2m twin-suspension bridge completes a £16m investment by The Celtic Manor Resort in building a new course, clubhouse and surrounding infrastructure, developments that were promised when one of sport’s biggest events was awarded to Wales back in 2001.

Primarily a footbridge for spectators, the bridge will also be able to carry golf buggies transporting players and officials as well as emergency vehicles, should the need arise.

Following three months of underground, foundation piling reaching a depth of 90ft, one of two masts stretching 85ft into the sky has already been hoisted into place and half of the decking has been craned into position under the support of thick steel cables.

A second mast on the Caerleon side of the river will be hoisted this week and the two sides of the bridge are expected to join next Monday, October 5.

Reinforcement, surfacing, abutment works and landscaping, as well as work on two miles of access roads, will continue until December.

Russell Phillips, Vice-President of Facilities and Development at The Celtic Manor Resort, said: “We are delighted that the new bridge is slotting into place ahead of schedule.

“The existing Twenty Ten Course practice ground would have been ample for The Ryder Cup but this area will all be taken up by a huge tented village during the tournament, such are the massive infrastructure requirements of the event.

“As well as the new practice ground, which includes a driving range and chipping and putting greens for the players, land on the other side of the river from the golf course will also house a large TV compound for the world’s sports broadcasters.”

As with the construction of The Twenty Ten Course, which opened in 2007 as the first in history to be purpose built for The Ryder Cup, and its clubhouse, the new bridge project has been overseen by Welsh contractors.

Port Talbot-based Andrew Scott Ltd is the main construction contractor and Rowecord Engineering of Newport has provided the superstructure and all steelwork.

The bridge has been designed with close attention to the environmental and ecological sensitivities of the tidal River Usk. A six-metre exclusion zone on either side of the river bank protects otter holts and ensures the migrating patterns of salmon and shad fish are not affected.

Phillips added: “We investigated smaller structures and even temporary bridges but the environmental agencies were most concerned that the River Usk and its banks should not be touched by the construction.

“We’ve more than met their recommendations in the design and building of this bridge.”

Edward Kitson, the Ryder Cup Match Director for Ryder Cup Europe, said: “The installation of the bridge is a vital component of The 2010 Ryder Cup, facilitating ease of access to both sides of the River Usk. The bridge will also be able to carry emergency vehicles and with this another part of the infrastructure required to host The 2010 Ryder Cup is slotting into place.

“We thank The Celtic Manor Resort for making this happen in such good time which is another demonstration of the superb commitment made by Sir Terry Matthews whose vision led to the biennial match being hosted in Wales for the first time.”

Celtic Manor Resort Hotel Celebrates 10th Birthday

The Celtic Manor Resort Hotel celebrates its 10th birthday today (Thursday August 6), toasting a decade of success as one of Europe’s leading business and leisure destinations.

The Resort Hotel – a massive expansion creating 333 new bedrooms, a large convention centre and a luxury spa – was officially opened by Tony Lewis, then chairman of the Wales Tourist Board on August 6, 1999.

Dwarfing the original 70-bedroom Celtic Manor Hotel, which still exists as The Manor House Hotel, the 10-storeyed building took more than two years to build at a cost of £90m. It has become an iconic landmark at the gateway to Wales, towering above the M4 motorway a few miles from the Severn Bridge near Newport.

Most of the construction cost, the largest single private investment in British hospitality industry history, was ploughed back into the South Wales economy with local contractors employed to build the hotel.

Many of the companies – like Whitehead Electrical of Newport, CMB Engineering of Cardiff and Camilleri Roofing of Barry – still work with the Resort and all were involved in the more recent construction of The Twenty Ten Clubhouse, which opened in 2007 at a further cost of £7m.

In the Newport (NP) postal code area alone, The Celtic Manor Resort pays out an annual £12.5m in employees’ salaries and to suppliers and contractors. Over the 10 years the Resort has been open that figure comfortably exceeds £100m and the boon to the local economy will be even bigger next year when The Ryder Cup is expected to bring in some £73m of expenditure to Wales.

Some 585 people are employed by the Resort on a permanent basis with a further 285 people engaged on a seasonal or casual basis for large conferences and events.

Just as the hotel launch itself was a relatively low-key affair in 1999 so the Resort plans to celebrate its 10th birthday modestly as it concentrates on looking after its guests, members and clients.

Staff, many of whom were present at the official opening in 1999, will be invited to enjoy a slice of a huge cake in the shape of the Resort Hotel, created by pastry chef Amit Kumar.

Resort Chief Executive Dylan Matthews said: “It’s hard to believe that it’s 10 years since we opened the Resort Hotel but we’re very proud of the facility that was created here and everything we’ve achieved over the past decade.

“It’s a time to look forward as well as look back because we’ve obviously got a very exciting year or two ahead with The Ryder Cup coming to The Celtic Manor Resort next September and October and many more great events no doubt in the future.”

The Resort Hotel’s first VIP guests in 1999 were from the International Seniors Amateur Golf Society, a group of more than 200 people from 11 different countries.

Ten years on, The Celtic Manor Resort has just hosted another prestigious party of international golf visitors from the PGA Magazine Ambassadors Programme.

As well as golf visitors, the Resort Hotel has welcomed almost every blue chip company from the United Kingdom to its convention centre which can host 1,500 delegates for a keynote address or 800 dining guests for a gala dinner. The attendant accommodation and leisure facilities have seen Celtic Manor voted the UK’s Top Conference Hotel in three of the last four years.

In all, the Resort Hotel has some 750,000 square feet of interior space and its expansive Atrium Lobby is dominated by two huge carved oak dragons, weighing almost a ton each.

The Resort Hotel houses two of the five restaurants at Celtic Manor, including the fine dining restaurant, The Crown at Celtic Manor, the only establishment in South Wales to hold three AA Rosettes.

The Resort Hotel was the largest construction project being undertaken in the UK at the time of its conclusion in 1999 and it was always a challenging build. As well as the sheer size of the building and its variety of facilities, the hotel was built on a steep hillside with no fewer than four floors opening out at ground level before the six storeys of bedrooms reached into the sky above the main Atrium Lobby.

The en-suite bathrooms in every one of the bedrooms were actually built off site and shipped in as pods before being lifted into the individual rooms by crane in what was a state-of-the-art construction technique before the turn of the millennium. The new Resort Hotel was also joined to the existing Manor House Hotel, a 19th Century mansion and former maternity hospital which was converted into a hotel in 1982.

The Celtic Manor Resort gets Rolex’s largest clock

Rolex, Partner and Official Timekeeper to The 2010 Ryder Cup, today put in place one of its largest clocks ahead of next year’s tournament, at the world class Celtic Manor Resort. In a spectacular feat of engineering, the signature Rolex timepiece has been positioned on the front elevation of the new Twenty Ten Clubhouse, just days before The 2009 Celtic Manor Wales Open.

The clock, which is one of only two Rolex clocks of this size in existence, measures 2.75m in diameter, weighs over 350kg and, due to its sheer size and weight, had to be winched into position by a crane. This centrepiece of the course now complements nine other clocks recently installed in the Twenty Ten Clubhouse and ten existing clocks around the Celtic Manor Resort.

In order to ensure pin point precision, the clock will operate by receiving an MSF signal, transmitted from Anthorn in Cumbria, which will keep the giant clock accurate to within one thousandth of a second.

On the installation of this magnificent timepiece David Cutler, General Manager of Rolex UK, said;

“There is no doubt that The 2010 Ryder Cup represents a milestone for The Celtic Manor Resort and, indeed, for Wales, and Rolex is delighted to be involved in its role as Official Timekeeper.

“Proud of its links with both The Ryder Cup and with Celtic Manor’s own Wales Open, it seems only appropriate that Rolex should mark this occasion in a special way and we are delighted to provide Celtic Manor with this, one of the two largest Rolex clocks in existence.”

The only other clock of the same size in the world is positioned on the Carnoustie Golf Course Hotel, overlooking the final hole of the celebrated Open Championship links.”

Dylan Matthews, Chief Executive of The Celtic Manor Resort, said;

“This impressive clock forms a fitting centrepiece for The Twenty Ten Clubhouse as it faces the 18th green where so much drama will unfold and where history will no doubt be made during The 2010 Ryder Cup.

“Rolex has been a valued Official Timekeeper of The Celtic Manor Wales Open for many years and we are delighted that our association with this prestigious and respected brand will be further enhanced by this signature time piece.

“It is now less than 500 days until The Ryder Cup takes place in Wales for the first time and, with this Rolex clock keeping such a close watch, we know that every single, remaining moment will be counted down with the utmost precision.”

On the installation of this magnificent timepiece David Cutler, General Manager of Rolex UK, said;

Dylan Matthews, Chief Executive of The Celtic Manor Resort, said;

Golf Academy Appointed Wales National Centre Of Excellence

The Celtic Manor Resort Golf Academy has become the Wales National Centre of Excellence following the launch of its new short game practice area, built with the assistance of a Legacy Fund grant from Ryder Cup Wales.

The new facility was officially unveiled on Tuesday May 5th in the presence of American golfing legend Arnold Palmer.

The new short game practice area features three pitching greens made from artificial turf and three tees, all with grass and artificial turf options, meaning the facility can be used for practice and tuition in all weathers throughout the year. In addition, the Legacy Fund grant will also support the development of an indoor putting area within the Golf Academy.

The development was made possible by a £150,000 Legacy Fund grant from Ryder Cup Wales and, following further investment by Celtic Manor, the total cost of the 12-month project to build the pitching area was £225,000.

Allied to the facilities already in place – including a 32-bay, two-tier driving range; specialist swing studios; chipping and putting greens; and a team of PGA professionals – The Celtic Manor Resort Golf Academy has now been appointed the National Centre of Excellence by the Golf Union of Wales, complementing the four other Regional Centres built with National Lottery funding from the Sports Council for Wales.

Elite national squads at all age groups will hone their skills on the short game practice area but it will also be available for use by a number of County squads and players of all abilities, from Celtic Manor members and visiting golfers to local children trying the game for the first time.

Celtic Manor Resort Chief Executive Dylan Matthews said: “It gives us great pleasure to open this new short game practice area and The Celtic Manor Resort takes great pride in becoming the Wales National Centre of Excellence.

“As the host venue for The 2010 Ryder Cup, we hope to leave a lasting legacy for future generations of Welsh golfers and we are grateful for the Legacy Fund grant we have received from Ryder Cup Wales which has been instrumental in the building of this important new facility.”

Ryder Cup Wales Chairman John Jermine said: “Celtic Manor Resort is our golfing ‘Gateway to Wales’ and with over 40 Legacy Fund projects throughout Wales our golfers will have the very best practice and coaching facilities available to them. We were delighted to contribute to this wonderful short game area and be part of this superb Centre of Excellence.”

Arnold Palmer attended the official opening after being presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the KPMG Golf Business Forum held at The Celtic Manor Resort from May 4-6.

“This sort of facility is very important in bringing on the next generation of golfers,” said Palmer, who won seven major championships and played in six Ryder Cups.

“It’s great to see as many young people as possible being given a start in the game and I hope they all enjoy their golf.”

Also present at the launch was another former Ryder Cup captain, Welshman Brian Huggett, who had the rare honour of beating Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in a Ryder Cup fourballs match with Maurice Bembridge in 1973.

Together they watched Welsh national squad golfers hit the first balls following the opening of the new short game practice area.

Ryder Cup Captains To Compete In The Celtic Manor Wales Open

Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin, the Captains of Europe and the United States for The 2010 Ryder Cup, will come together in a competitive arena for the first time since their respective appointments when they line up in The Celtic Manor Wales Open from June 4-7, 2009, at The Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, South Wales.

Montgomerie, who was selected as European Captain in January, will be playing in his seventh Celtic Manor Wales Open and competing for the second time on The Twenty Ten Course – the first course in history built specifically to host The Ryder Cup – where last year he opened with rounds of 69 and 68.

For Pavin, who took over the reins from Paul Azinger last December, it will be his first visit to The Celtic Manor Resort and his first look at a course where his charges will tackle Montgomerie’s European Team from October 1-3, 2010. Not surprisingly, the 49 year old Californian admitted he was very much looking forward to the prospect.

“When I was appointed United States Ryder Cup Captain I spoke of what a great thrill it was for me to have this wonderful honour,” he said. “The Ryder Cup is the most dynamic and intense experience a competitive golfer will ever have and for me personally, the dream will begin to become reality with my trip to Wales in June.

“I have heard a lot of great things about The Twenty Ten Course and I cannot wait to see how it is set up for The Celtic Manor Wales Open as well as imagining how it may be set up for The Ryder Cup itself in 18 months time.

“I started my professional golf career in Europe and have extremely fond memories of those days and the wonderful people that I encountered along the way. I look forward to bringing my wife, Lisa, to Wales and connecting with the people.

“As Captain of the US Team, I am determined to lead our Team with passion and determination, but in the spirit of great sportsmanship and camaraderie. In these tough global economic times, particularly, we need to keep this wonderful event in perspective. Don’t be surprised to find us hanging out in pubs the week of the Wales Open enjoying friendly banter about the possibilities of 2010.

“Colin and I have met each other on three occasions in The Ryder Cup and it will be great to see him again. We are both passionate guys with a genuine love for the game and it will be fantastic to play in the same tournament together on the same course where we will both have the honour of being Captains in what I believe is the greatest event in golf.”

Montgomerie admitted he was once again looking forward to teeing it up in The Celtic Manor Wales Open and welcomed the news that his opposite number would be alongside him in the field.

“It is tremendous news that Corey is playing and myself and Gaynor look forward very much to welcoming him and Lisa to Wales,” said the European Captain. “Throughout his career, Corey has shown himself as a great competitor and I am sure, like me, he will be striving to win The Celtic Manor Wales Open as well as looking ahead to his own plans for next year’s Ryder Cup.

“I always enjoy playing in The Celtic Manor Wales Open. It has additional significance as we are playing on the course where next year’s Ryder Cup will unfold. It is set up to challenge the best and, being a course with a whole host of tempting options and punishing hazards, there will be much for Corey and I to examine.”

Montgomerie will bring one of the most impressive playing records of any European golfer to The Celtic Manor Wales Open. Aside from his record eight Harry Vardon Trophy successes, he has also 31 European Tour International Schedule titles to his credit, the most recorded by any British golfer in history.

However, it is in The Ryder Cup that the 45 year old Scot has excelled on the international stage. He has played in eight matches and is, not only unbeaten in each and every one of his eight singles encounters, he also had the honour of holing the winning putt for Europe on two occasions; at Club de Golf Valderrama in 1997 and at Oakland Hills Country Club in 2004.

Pavin’s visit to the Principality will represent the 1995 US Open Champion’s first appearance in a European Tour event outside the Major Championships since he finished in a tie for seventh place in the Scandinavian Masters at Arlandastad Golf in Stockholm in August 2007.

On his home US PGA Tour, Pavin has triumphed 15 times, while his international roll of honour includes victory in the 1993 World Match Play Championship at Wentworth Club in England – where he beat Nick Faldo on the final green of an enthralling final – and success by three shots in the 1983 German Open at the Golf und Landclub in Cologne, beating Seve Ballesteros and Tony Johnstone into second place. He has also recorded tournament victories in Japan, Korea, New Zealand and South Africa.

But, somewhat like his opposite number at The Celtic Manor Resort in 2010, The Ryder Cup has played a defining part in his career, having competed in the 1991, 1993 and 1995 American Teams, posting eight wins in his 13 matches. He was also assistant captain to Tom Lehman at The K Club in 2006.

He is the 26th United States Captain and will lead an American Team which, at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky last September, won The Ryder Cup for the first time since 1999. Pavin will also attempt to become the first US Captain since Tom Watson at The Belfry in 1993 to lead a team to victory on European soil.

“I played my first Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island in 1991 and things like listening to the national anthem and feeling the pressure as a player cemented my love for the event in my blood forever,” he said. “I knew then I wanted to play in as many Ryder Cups as possible and dreamt about being Captain. Now that dream has come true.”

Dylan Matthews, Chief Executive of The Celtic Manor Resort, welcomed the news that both Ryder Cup Captains were poised to tee up.

“We extended a sponsor’s invitation to Corey Pavin as soon as he was appointed the United States Ryder Cup Team Captain and we are delighted that he has agreed to play, as we are with Colin Montgomerie, who has always been a popular attraction at The Celtic Manor Wales Open and we are delighted to welcome him back,” he said.

“Knowing Colin as I do, I am sure he will be keen to give the leading contenders for places in his Team a good run for their money as they contest The Celtic Manor Wales Open on the course where they will aim to win back The Ryder Cup in 2010.

“As for Corey, I am sure he is going to be a fantastic Team Captain but he also remains a seriously good golfer and I’m looking forward to seeing him play at The Celtic Manor Wales Open. I am also looking forward to showing him the high level of Welsh hospitality that he and his Team can expect at Celtic Manor in 2010.”

The Twenty Ten Course hosted its first Celtic Manor Wales Open last year when Australian Scott Strange produced a sublime four day performance; four rounds in the 60s giving the 32 year old from Perth a four shot winning margin with a 22 under par aggregate of 262.

The tournament itself first featured on The European Tour International Schedule in 2000 when Denmark’s Steen Tinning triumphed on the old Wentwood Hills course and he was succeeded as champion on that course by Ireland’s Paul McGinley (2001), Scotland’s Paul Lawrie (2002) and Englishmen Ian Poulter (2003) and Simon Khan (2004).

From 2005 to 2007, The Celtic Manor Wales Open was contested on the Newport venue’s Roman Road course with the winners there being Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiménez (2005), Sweden’s Robert Karlsson (2006) and Richard Sterne of South Africa (2007).

Be Part Of The Ryder Cup Drama

The Celtic Manor Resort has launched a new Country Membership for its prestigious Twenty Ten Club, encouraging golfers from all over the United Kingdom to become a real part of next year’s Ryder Cup.

With the majority of the club’s existing membership coming from Celtic Manor’s immediate surroundings in South Wales, the Country Membership offers an opportunity for those from further afield to join one of the most prestigious new golf clubs in Britain.

Restricted to golfers whose primary residence is outside of a 75-mile radius of The Celtic Manor Resort, Country Membership brings all of the same fantastic benefits as Full Membership but with a saving of £1,000 on both the joining fee and the annual subscription.

Not only will country members enjoy full playing privileges on the spectacular Twenty Ten Course, the first in history to be purpose built for The Ryder Cup, they will also receive a season ticket to the big match between Europe and America in 2010 as well as the opportunity to purchase another one, both tickets including hospitality places in a members’ pavilion.

Before the much-anticipated showdown takes place, country members will have the chance to familiarise themselves with a stunning golf course which is bound to create high drama during the fevered atmosphere of The Ryder Cup. With water hazards on half of its holes, some driveable par fours and reachable par fives, The Twenty Ten contains a host of risk and reward dilemmas which golfers will never tire of playing.

Wales and British Lions rugby legend Gareth Edwards is the honorary captain of The Twenty Ten Club and a private members’ lounge and luxury locker rooms exude the elegance of the traditional gentleman’s club within a stunning new clubhouse.

Two more championship courses – Roman Road and The Montgomerie – also form part of the membership package as well as use of the Forum Health Club with its state-of-the-art gymnasium and 20-metre swimming pool within the Resort Hotel.

For new country members, all this comes at a cost of just £2,000 joining fee, payable over two years interest free, and £2,000 annual subscription.

Facilities at the five-star Celtic Manor Resort also include a luxury spa and children’s creche, as well as tennis courts, shooting, fishing, mountain biking and walking trails plus a choice of outstanding restaurants.

Conveniently situated on the M4 just two hours from London, the Resort is readily accessible to people travelling from most parts of the UK.

Dylan Matthews, Chief Executive of The Celtic Manor Resort, said: “We have been delighted to see so many visitors come to play The Twenty Ten Course from all over the UK and beyond.

“Many of them have been so impressed that they would like the opportunity to return on a regular basis and make themselves a real part of The Ryder Cup in 2010 – the biggest sporting event ever to come to Wales.

“Launching this Country Membership will enable them to do just that and enjoy the world-class facilities at The Celtic Manor Resort.”

From a gated entrance and valet parking on arrival to having their shoes and clubs cleaned after any round, all members of The Twenty Ten Club are made to feel every bit as special as the stars who will contest The Ryder Cup in 2010.

The Twenty Ten Clubhouse was voted UK Clubhouse of the Year 2008 by readers of Clubhouse Magazine and its Rafters Restaurant has already been awarded a coveted AA rosette.

Country Membership at The Twenty Ten Club also includes two season tickets to The Celtic Manor Wales Open, a leading annual European Tour event. The total membership will be capped at 450 golfers and visitor tee times are strictly limited to protect members’ playing interests and retain the unique prestige of The Twenty Ten Club.

For those living within the 75-mile radius of Celtic Manor, opportunities to become a full member still exist. For more information visit celtic-manor.com or call the Membership team on + 44 (0)1633 410300.

Celtic Manor Resort Welcomes Colin Montgomerie As Ryder Cup Captain

Montgomerie was officially appointed to the role on Wednesday and will spearhead Europe’s efforts to reclaim the trophy from the Americans next year.

Montgomerie has strong ties with Celtic Manor, having designed a course that bears his name at the five-star Resort and acted as an ambassador for The Celtic Manor Wales Open, a leading event on The European Tour.

The popular Scot also has previous experience of captaincy at Celtic Manor, having skippered the European team in the All*Star Cup, a celebrity version of The Ryder Cup.

Sir Terry Matthews, Chairman of The Celtic Manor Resort, said: “We send our warmest congratulations to Colin Montgomerie on his appointment as Europe’s captain for The Ryder Cup at The Celtic Manor Resort.

“As the winner of eight Order of Merit titles on The European Tour, Colin Montgomerie’s achievements as a golfer have been exceptional.

“He has also made an enormous contribution to The Ryder Cup in his eight appearances as a player and has been recognised as an influential leader on the course during recent European victories. We are sure he will lead the European team as a non-playing captain in the same inspirational manner.

“Colin has long been a good friend and supporter of The Celtic Manor Resort where we are proud to have a course designed by such a distinguished golfing figure.

“He has always been a popular competitor at The Celtic Manor Wales Open and I am sure he will get a fantastic response from the Welsh crowds as captain. We look forward to seeing even more of him over the next 18 months as we make the final preparations for The Ryder Cup in 2010.”

Having already designed The Montgomerie at Celtic Manor, the 45-year-old captain will now switch his attention to setting up The Twenty Ten Course for The Ryder Cup, in consultation with Celtic Manor’s Director of Golf Courses, Jim McKenzie.

The Twenty Ten is the first course in history to be purpose built for The Ryder Cup and is currently being enjoyed by club members whose membership privileges also guarantee highly sought-after season tickets to The Ryder Cup and full playing rights on all three championship courses at Celtic Manor.

Welsh Hotel Voted Best For Conferences Again

The Celtic Manor Resort has been voted Top UK Conference Hotel for the third time in four years.

The reader poll in Conference & Incentive Travel magazine has now bestowed the prestigious award on Celtic Manor in 2005, 2007 and 2008, reaffirming the Resort’s reputation as the best venue for hosting corporate events in Great Britain.

The five-star Resort in South Wales, which will stage golf’s Ryder Cup in 2010, beat off some strong competition from top hotels in and around London to claim the award. The Hilton Metropole was second and The Grove, which topped the poll in 2006, was third.

Its two hotels – offering both a four- and a five-star option – its championship golf courses and its flexible event space, capable of hosting two to 1,500 delegates, were identified as key factors in Celtic Manor’s latest success.

Celtic Manor Convention Centre Manager Nancy Mollett said: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award for the third time in four years.

“It is particularly satisfying that this accolade comes from the readers of Conference & Incentive Travel. In effect, this is a ringing endorsement from our clients, including the executives who plan and arrange conventions for some of the biggest blue chip companies.

“The award reflects not only the excellence of the facilities but also the consistency of service we are able to offer. I am very proud of the entire team at Celtic Manor whose hard work has once again made this recognition possible.”

The Resort’s Convention Centre – one of the largest hotel facilities of its kind in Europe – houses the Caernarfon Suite which can seat 1,500 delegates for a keynote address or 800 dining guests for a gala dinner. An additional 16 meeting rooms with break-out areas can cater for every event from a small meeting around a table to large presentations for hundreds of people.

With 400 bedrooms in two hotels, three championship golf courses, five restaurants, two luxurious spas and health clubs as well as a host of other activities, The Celtic Manor Resort occupies a unique position in the marketplace.

The venue is also a finalist in the Best UK Hotel category at the Meetings & Incentive Travel Awards which will be announced on February 23. It was voted Wales’ Leading Golf Resort at the 2008 World Travel Awards and its Twenty Ten Clubhouse was named UK Clubhouse of the Year.

The Resort’s fine dining restaurant, The Crown at Celtic Manor, has just been awarded three AA rosettes, placing it among the top 200 restaurants in the United Kingdom, and is also listed in the Good Food Guide 2009.

The restaurant is one of only 17 new recipients of the prestigious award in the 2009 list and is one of only three from outside London.

Fewer than 200 restaurants in the UK achieve three AA rosettes or more and this year’s winners were praised by the AA for their “high standards”.

Giovanna Grossi, the AA’s hotel services group area manager, said: “Restaurants serving food of a three-rosette standard are worthy of recognition from well beyond their local area.”

The AA’s guidelines for three rosettes go on to say: “This award takes a restaurant into the big league. Expectations of the kitchen are high: exact technique, flair and imagination must come through in every dish, and balance and depth of flavour are all-important.”

Only opened in April in a ground-breaking partnership with The Crown at Whitebrook, the new restaurant has also been listed in the Good Food Guide for 2009.

James Sommerin, who has won and retained a Michelin Star at The Crown at Whitebrook, is now the executive chef at both restaurants while Tim McDougall delivers his vision as the head chef at Celtic Manor, the five-star Resort which will host The Ryder Cup in 2010.

Other new recipients of three AA rosettes in 2009 include Angela Hartnett’s Murano in Mayfair while restaurants retaining the award include Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s and Gary Rhodes’ Restaurant W1.

The Crown at Celtic Manor’s general manager, David Hennigan, said: “It is a real honour to have been awarded three AA rosettes within our first year of operation, especially as this is such a highly regarded commendation within the industry.

“Three AA rosettes is a real endorsement of what we are trying to achieve here at The Crown at Celtic Manor where we strive to offer the ultimate fine dining experience. This comes as a result of all the hard work, professionalism and enthusiasm of the entire team.”

The Resort Hotel has enjoyed a maximum five-star rating from the AA for the quality of its accommodation since opening in 1999 but this is the first time one of its restaurants has achieved three AA rosettes following a rigorous inspection.

The Crown is one of only five restaurants in Wales to achieve the award, the others being Bodysgallen Hall, Llandudno; Carlton Riverside, Llanwrtyd Wells; Tan-y-Foel Country House, Betws-y-Coed; and Ynyshir Hall, Machynlleth. Only 158 restaurants in the whole of the UK hold three AA rosettes with an even more select band of 31 boasting four or five rosettes.

The Crown at Celtic Manor was also short-listed among the top three British and Irish hotels and spas for the Conde Nast Johansens/Champagne Taittinger Wine List Awards 2009.

The next special event at The Crown at Celtic Manor is a Gourmet Whisky Evening on Friday January 23. For more information or to book for this event or a meal, call Reservations on 01633 410262.

Commemorative Shotgun for Ryder Cup Venue

In 2010, The 38th Ryder Cup will be held at The Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, South Wales. The Ryder Cup is one of the major sporting events in the world with an expected global TV audience of 1 billion viewers. To commemorate the event Holloway & Naughton ® have been commissioned to build a Premier Range sporting shotgun.

Celebrating the links between shooting and golf, the shotgun will be a truly world-class work of art, showcasing the exceptional artisan skills based in the UK. The internationally acclaimed Welsh engraver Phil Coggan has agreed to engrave the shotgun, using a combination of Welsh and American themes.

Shooting and golf are two of the most popular outdoor sporting pursuits and share many skills, particularly the composure and competitive edge required in major tournaments. Celtic Manor, through its Treetops Shooting School, is just one of the world’s leading resorts to offer both activities to its guests and corporate clients.

Simon Gibson, OBE, Chief Executive of Wesley Clover, the holding company that owns The Celtic Manor Resort, explained: “The gun will be a celebration of Wales hosting The Ryder Cup for the first time and a demonstration of British craftsmanship and art. The gun maker and engraver were selected for their excellence in design and quality.”

The Holloway & Naughton ® Commemorative shotgun has the essential qualities needed by a top class competitor. This is in keeping with the spirit of The Ryder Cup, and the same exacting requirements of those golf professionals who will participate in the match.

It is anticipated that the shotgun, scheduled for completion in June 2010, will be displayed during the prestigious golf tournament which takes place from October 1-3.

The Celtic Manor Resort won its bid to host the biennial match between Europe and America back in 2001 when it pledged to build a world-class golf course with supporting facilities including a new clubhouse. These are now complete following the opening of The Twenty Ten Club in 2007, three years ahead of the event.

Andrew Harvison, owner of Holloway & Naughton ® is delighted to be working with engraver Philip Coggan, and he is grateful to receive the commission to be associated with one of the world’s greatest sporting events.

ENDS
About The Celtic Manor Golf Resort

Host venue for The Ryder Cup in 2010, the five-star Celtic Manor Resort is set in more than 1,400 acres of panoramic parkland at the gateway to Wales.
Crown At Celtic Manor Enters Good Food Guide

The Celtic Manor Resort has been listed in the prestigious Good Food Guide for the first time with its Crown at Celtic Manor fine-dining restaurant featuring among the highest new entries.

Only opened in April as a ground-breaking partnership with The Crown at Whitebrook, the restaurant has achieved swift recognition from the Good Food Guide 2009, the leading consumer publication produced by Which? magazine.

James Sommerin, who has won and retained a Michelin Star at The Crown at Whitebrook, is now the executive chef at both restaurants while Tim McDougall delivers his vision as the head chef at Celtic Manor, the five-star Resort which will host The Ryder Cup in 2010.

The Good Food Guide commends The Crown at Celtic Manor for its “classic feel” and “deft handling of flavours”.

The restaurant’s general manager, David Hennigan, said: “It is a real honour to have won a place in the Good Food Guide within six months of opening as many fine restaurants have to wait years for such recognition.

“This comes as a result of all the hard work and dedication of the entire team at The Crown at Celtic Manor and is a reflection of how much they have achieved in a short time.

“What is especially pleasing is that listings in The Good Food Guide are not just based on the findings of their own independent guide judges but also on the views of customers who take the time to send in their comments on their experiences of the restaurant.”

The Crown at Celtic Manor enters the Good Food Guide with a cooking score of Five, the same mark awarded to celebrated restaurants such as Gary Rhodes’ W1, a fellow new entry, Rick Stein’s seafood restaurant at Padstow, Marco Pierre White’s Yew Tree and Gordon Ramsay at Claridges.

With a cooking score of Six, its established sister restaurant, The Crown at Whitebrook, is among the Good Food Guide’s Top 40 restaurants in the UK.

Both restaurants have also been shortlisted among the top three in their separate categories for the coveted Wine List Awards for UK and Ireland in 2009.

There is a chance to watch the culinary skills of chefs Sommerin and McDougall up close when The Crown at Celtic Manor hosts a live cookery demonstration on Saturday December 6.

For more information click here or to book for this event or a meal, call Reservations on 01633 410262.
