Young Celtic Manor chefs have emerged with a large haul of medals from the Welsh International Culinary Championships.
Pastry commis-chef Claire Gillard won a gold, three silvers and a bronze including best in class for gateaux in the championships at Coleg Llandrillo in North Wales.
Twenty Ten commis-chef Sarah Day bagged two gold, one silver and two bronze while Jack Bond, from the Newbridge on Usk kitchen, won a silver and bronze. Sam Lewis, commis-chef at the Olive Tree restaurant, completed the Celtic Manor quartet competing in the championships and claimed a bronze medal.
The talented chefs were rewarded for their technique in categories as diverse as knife skills, potato piping, petit fours, chicken cuts and fish courses.
Running alongside the event was the Junior Chef of Wales final in which Jonathan Pring won a silver medal for finishing in third place. Jonathan had previously performed very well in the South Wales heat to reach the final which was won by Chris Tull from the Castle Hotel, Conwy.
As a result of his efforts, Jonathan has been called up to join the Welsh Junior Culinary team along with another youthful Celtic Manor chef, Matt Friswell.
