Woosnam sets sights on home victory

Category: Events, News, Up Your Game

The 1991 Masters Tournament champion Ian Woosnam has set his sights on securing a home victory when the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open takes place at the Celtic Manor Resort.

The Welshman will be aiming to add the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open to an already illustrious CV when he headlines the field in the 13th edition of the £250,000 event, which will be held on the Roman Road course from May 29-31.

Woosnam, a winner of five Senior Tour and 29 European Tour titles during a glittering career, will be joined in Newport by a whole host of fellow former Ryder Cup players and the winners of more than 750 tournaments worldwide. He said:

It’s great for the Senior Tour and also for Wales that the Wales Senior Open is back on the schedule, and with a brand new sponsor to boot. Obviously I’d love to add the tournament to my list of wins, so I’ll be trying my best to get my hands on the trophy at Celtic Manor this year. It’s always nice to play in front of your home fans, so hopefully we’ll get a big crowd to come out and support us all, just like we had at Porthcawl for the Senior Open last year.

Woosnam never managed to win the Wales Open at Celtic Manor but was twice a winner on Welsh soil on the European Tour down the road at St Pierre in 1983 and 1990.

He has also come mightily close to winning the senior tournament in Wales on several occasions, most notably in 2008, when he was the joint leader heading into the final round but ultimately lost out on the title by two shots to Peter Mitchell. More recently, he finished in a tie for third place behind Phil Golding the last time the tournament was held, at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in 2013.

The 2015 tournament is being supported by the title sponsor, SSE Enterprise, as well as the Welsh Government, Celtic Manor Resort, Nemo Personal Finance and several other local companies.
