By Jessica Howells,
My picnic hamper vision of rustic bread and homemade lemonade always seems to end up a nightmarish carrier bag of soggy sandwiches and flat pop. So I was understandably thrilled when I discovered Celtic Manorcan take the hassle out of dreaded outdoor dining, with their very own Gourmet Picnic Hamper. I was left with nothing to do but concentrate on crossing my fingers for the weather and wondering where the picnic blanket was.
With locally sourced fresh produce lovingly encased in a vintage style floral Joules hamper, the moment I picked up our ‘Brecon’ hamper I was impressed. To my son’s delight, he was presented with his own miniature hamper, for him to carry, containing a kids al fresco feast. You must be a resident of the hotel to take advantage of the picnic hampers, but with the 2,000 acres of beautiful Welsh scenery, the Resort grounds are the perfect setting.
Whilst the hamper was described as for two, there was enough to feed a small army. The array of sweet and savoury goodies left us grazing lazily in the sunshine throughout the day. Favourites included triple decker sandwiches packed full with ham, pieces of pitta for dunking in hummus, Blaenafon Welsh Cheddar Selection and home-made pork pies with plum chutney. Not to mention exceedingly patriotic sweet treats including Welsh Bara Brith, home-made Welsh cakes and Welsh Hills daffodil shortbread.
Meanwhile the little one felt quite the picnic connoisseur with his hamper, picking from his selection including sandwiches, handmade crisps and fresh fruit, at his leisure.
Later we indulged in a spot of afternoon tea with home-made raisin scones with generous helpings of clotted cream and strawberry preserve, made all the easier with our hamper’s plates and cutlery.
The Gourmet Picnic Hamper elegantly delivers on its promise of making your day in the countryside ‘a stylish affair’. If you’re looking for a fun family day out with a bit of luxury, this is a must. Celtic Manor certainly knows the posh way to picnic.
