The scenic Vale of Llangollen Golf Club becomes a new qualifying venue for the Principality Junior Wales Open when the tournament tees off during the Easter holidays.
More than 70 young golfers from across North Wales and the north west of England will compete at the Vale of Llangollen (pictured above) for coveted places in a summer final played at Celtic Manor on the celebrated Twenty Ten Course, which staged Wales’ first Ryder Cup in 2010.
The tournament hopes to unearth the next generation of Welsh golfing talent and previous winners include Amy Boulden (pictured below), the young product of Llandudno’s Maesdu club who has just turned professional following a stellar amateur career.
The Vale of Llangollen replaces Harlech’s Royal St David’s as the northern qualifier and should be accessible to more juniors who can all enjoy 18 holes on the picturesque Dee Valley course and take aim at some great prizes from Asbri Golf.
Vale of Llangollen secretary manager Bob Hardy said:
We’ve got a new young professional at the club, Matt Davies, and he’s trying to get more young people in the community playing golf, so we’re happy to support opportunities like this for juniors.
I’m sure the juniors entering this qualifier will enjoy the challenge of playing our course. The setting is absolutely stunning - surrounded by Welsh hills on all sides and a beautiful finishing four holes played along the river.
The Principality Junior Wales Open tees off at the Vale of Llangollen on Monday April 14 and further qualifiers follow at Builth Wells (April 15), Langland Bay Golf Club (April 16), Celtic Manor’s Roman Road (April 23) and Radyr (April 24)
Boy and girl winners in Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 age groups will then progress to the final at Celtic Manor on August 13, which includes an overnight stay at the five-star resort.
Celtic Manor Resort Chief Executive Dylan Matthews said:
The qualifying events for the Principality Junior Wales Open are played on some of the finest courses throughout Wales and we’re delighted to add the Vale of Llangollen to the roster. I’m sure we will see some great competition in all the qualifiers and we look forward to welcoming the successful winners to Celtic Manor in August.
