Ant and Dec feel the pressure as golf skills go under the spotlight

Ant and Dec showed why they are Britain’s most popular television presenters as they entertained the crowds in skills challenges at Golf Live and The Celebrity Cup.

The hosts of Britain’s Got Talent and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! arrived to a rapturous reception at Celtic Manor and proceeded to joke their way through five special tests of golfing skill under the instruction of Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie.

“We’re up for a BAFTA tomorrow,” said Ant as he climbed into a greenside bunker. “But I won’t be anything like as nervous as I am now.

“I can’t believe I’m doing this in front of all of yous.”

Dec had earlier duffed his chip in the nearest the pin challenge but recovered his composure to beat his friend with the final shot of the session – a booming drive down the fairway.

He had earlier grabbed a driver from a young fan and said it was just about his size and both entertainers teased Montgomerie and BBC commentator Andrew Cotter to the delight of a packed grandstand.

Ant and Dec also attended Saturday evening’s glittering gala dinner in the five-star hotel’s sumptuous Caernarfon Ballroom in aid of the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation. Their fun-filled daytime cameo was part of an action-packed Golf Live and The Celebrity Cup, which features 24 more celebrity golfers going head-to-head representing England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The tournament competitors were every bit as nervous as Ant and Dec on the first tee.

Wales soccer star Craig Bellamy said: “If I’d known it was going to be this big an event, I’d never have agreed to come here.”

Bellamy was not alone in the Wales team in giving up a lot of golfing experience to their morning opponents, Scotland, who justified their pre-tournament favourites’ tag with a convincing victory in the morning.

England closed the gap in the overall standings by beating Wales in the afternoon as Ireland gave Scotland a good run for their money to keep alive their hopes of reaching the final on Sunday afternoon.

Elsewhere at Golf Live, the world’s leading interactive golf show, European Tour stars Shane Lowry and Soren Kjeldsen joined Montgomerie, the Ryder Cup winning captain at Celtic Manor, to give instruction masterclasses and long driving champion Joe Miller and trick shot artist Paul Barrington showcased their jaw-dropping skills to large galleries.

Sky Sports presenter Di Dougherty accompanied Cotter on the microphone to describe all the action and visiting golfers were encouraged to have a go themselves at nearest the pin and driving challenges and get fitted for the latest equipment.

A final day jam-packed with golfing entertainment takes place on Sunday when the inaugural Celebrity Cup champions will be crowned.

Tickets priced £20 adults and £5 children are available on the gate.
