Scots take inaugural Celebrity Cup in play-off drama at Celtic Manor

Tennis ace Jamie Murray proved he could hold his nerve as well as his serve when he span in a beautiful pitch to six feet as the inaugural Celebrity Cup at Golf Live ended in the high drama of a nearest-the-pin shootout.

Murray’s winner from 100 yards back down the fairway completed a brilliant comeback from the former Wimbledon mixed doubles champion and ex-rugby star Kenny Logan in Sunday’s final.

Two strokes down with just two holes left to play, the Scots were allowed back in by England’s Rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall and Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Peter Jones and, having missed a six-foot putt to win on the final green, Murray more than made amends in the play-off.

The dramatic finish was a fitting finale for the tournament at Celtic Manor which drew sizeable galleries of golf fans and celebrity spotters despite some wintry rain and wind on the concluding day.

Delighted Scotland captain Gavin Hastings said:

Jamie was outstanding on the last couple of holes. I’d just like to pay tribute to all the supporters who have turned out because we’ve all had an absolute ball over the weekend.

Football legends Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen and Gordon Strachan completed the winning Scotland team who justified their pre-tournament favourites tag but were made to fight all the way by England.

Host nation Wales, who started slowly on Saturday, came back with a vengeance to beat Ireland twice on the final day and consign the Irish to the wooden spoon.

The 24 celebrities competing for the four home nations were joined on Saturday by Ant and Dec who made a cameo appearance in fun-filled skills challenges with Colin Montgomerie.

The popular TV presenters stayed on to tee off the charity auction at a glittering gala dinner which raised almost £65,000 for the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation before jetting off to the BAFTA awards where they were nominated for two gongs.

Montgomerie said:

I’d like to thank all the celebrities for giving up time in their busy schedules and for their efforts in raising so much money for the charity we founded in memory of my mother. I know they join me in thanking Celtic Manor for providing such a fantastic venue for us to play this event.

The Celebrity Cup proved a popular new addition to Golf Live, an innovative, interactive golf show which moved to Celtic Manor for the first time over the weekend.

When they were not watching the stars of sport and showbiz on the fairways, the golfing public were able to take part themselves in nearest the pin and driving challenges, sample the latest equipment on the range and browse a tented village of golf clothing, gadgets and holiday destinations.
