Celtic Manor witnessed the tightest ever finish to a Principality Junior Wales Open
qualifying event when three different three-handicappers returned the
same superb score of 71, just one over par on the Roman Road course.
In the end, three into two did not go and Celtic Manor’s Lewis Sweet took the best gross score on countback and Joshua Bryan from Worcester also qualified after claiming the nett prize in similar fashion. Another Celtic Manor member, Lewys Sanges, was the unlucky odd one out to miss out on a final played on his home club’s Twenty Ten Course in August.
For Sweet (pictured below) it was third time lucky as he reached the prestigious final for the first time in his third and final year of
competing in the Under-18 section of the Principality Junior Wales Open.
The Gwent county player said:
I missed out by a shot last year so it was great to finally qualify in my last year as a junior. I know the Roman Road course really well as a Championship Member here but I’ve only played the Twenty Ten a few times. It’s always special to play that course and I can’t wait for the final.
Llanwern’s Michael Powell qualified from the Under-13 category but the Under-15 and Girls’ sections were both dominated by cross-border raiders from England.
Over at Radyr Golf Club, the fifth and final qualifying event for Wales’ premier junior golf tournament saw the Vale of Glamorgan’s Matt Roberts win through with a nett 66 among the Under-18 boys. Harry Burt, from Horsehay Village in Shropshire, returned the best gross score of 71.
Haverfordwest’s Lewys Thomas and Cardiff’s Sam Mayer progressed from the Under-15 section and another Cardiff junior, Jacob Harrington-Wara, won through from the Under-13s.
Some 50 finalists in all will battle it out on 13th August in the national final on the spectacular Twenty Ten Course, the venue for such a memorable Ryder Cup in 2010. They will also enjoy an
overnight stay at the five-star Celtic Manor Resort as part of their
prize for qualifying which also included a set of Asbri iron head
