Hollywood super-hero among new quartet announced for star-studded Golf Live tournament
Film star Ioan Gruffudd will add a splash of Hollywood glamour to the golfing fairways when he returns home to South Wales for the star-studded Celebrity Cup at Golf Live.
Gruffudd has made LA his base while starring in blockbuster movies like Titanic, 102 Dalmatians, Black Hawk Down and the Fantastic Four films based on the comic super-heroes. The actor, who also rose to fame taking the lead role in the Hornblower TV dramas, will return to his native South Wales when he represents the Welsh team in The Celebrity Cup, part of Golf Live at the Celtic Manor Resort from May 10-12.
Teeing up against Gruffudd for Ireland will be former Westlife singer Brian McFadden, who sold 36 million records including seven straight No 1 singles during his time with the best-selling boy band. He also flies in for the event from sunnier shores down under, where he has been a respected judge on Australia’s Got Talent. It’s a bit of homecoming for Brian as he will then be kicking off his UK tour on the 19th May.
Other celebrity golfers announced in the latest round of team picks are Scottish tennis player Jamie Murray and another Hollywood actor, Matthew Goode, who will represent England in the four nations tournament. Murray, the brother of Olympic and US Open singles champion Andy Murray, won the Wimbledon mixed doubles with Jelena Jankovic in 2007 and Goode starred opposite Nicole Kidman in this year’s cinema release, Stoker, and appeared on TV screens recently in Stephen Poliakoff’s BBC drama, Dancing On The Edge.
All four new recruits join other star names already announced for the event:
Comedian Rob Brydon
Rugby World Cup winner Matt Dawson
Olympic hero Sir Steve Redgrave
Match of the Day pundit Alan Hansen
International rugby stars Gavin Hastings and Kenny Logan
Football legend Kenny Dalglish
TV personalities Gethin Jones and Jodie Kidd
Boyzone singer Keith Duffy
This Morning TV presenter Matt Johnson
With national pride at stake, the golf is expected to be highly competitive and the winning team will collect a trophy presented by TV’s most popular double act, Ant and Dec. Overseeing the celebrity tournament is European Tour legend, Colin Montgomerie who is returning to the scene of his greatest triumph after leading Europe to Ryder Cup victory at Celtic Manor in 2010.
The all-new Celebrity Cup forms part of Golf Live, an exciting interactive golf show where Montgomerie and other tour stars and coaches will demonstrate their wonderful skills and the public get the chance to buy equipment custom-fit to their individual requirements. The weekend also includes a glittering gala dinner on Saturday night and the entire event will raise funds for the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation, founded in memory of Colin’s mother who died of lung cancer.
Tickets for Golf Live and The Celebrity Cup start from just £15. For more information or to buy tickets visit www.thecelebritycup.co.uk or phone 01633 410318.
