Bale targets another big win for Wales

Category: Events, News, The Celebrity Cup

Wales footballer Gareth Bale is the latest superstar to sign up for the Celebrity Cup golf tournament at Celtic Manor.

After scoring another vital goal in Wales’ 1-0 win over Belgium, Bale confirmed he would be turning his attention to shooting at flagsticks on the golf course for the event on July 4-5.

Real Madrid star Bale, who became the world’s most expensive footballer when he transferred to the Spanish giants, will join a Welsh team that is captained by TV comic Rob Brydon and includes Wales’ newest knight, Sir Gareth Edwards. Bale said:

When I’m back home in Wales, I really enjoy playing at The Celtic Manor Resort. I’m looking forward to pulling on a Wales shirt of a different kind in July and competing in the Celebrity Cup for the first time, hopefully we can win it back from England! We have got a strong squad, led by captain and comedian Rob Brydon and I’m looking forward to meeting up with the team and getting out on the course.

Wales will compete against England, Ireland and Scotland in the four nations event. Other stars of sport and showbiz playing include TV presenters Vernon Kay, Ben Shephard, Gethin Jones and Zoe Hardman, Irish singing sensations Keith Duffy, Ronan Keating and Brian McFadden, and Scottish footballing royalty Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen and Gordon Strachan.

Celtic Manor Chief Executive Ian Edwards said:

We are delighted that one of the world’s most exciting footballers will be joining us for the Celebrity Cup. The Celebrity Cup has been a resounding success since we launched the event in 2013 and this is our best field yet.

The last few celebrity names are still to be added to the team sheets for the tournament which saw England gain revenge by beating Scotland in last year’s final. The four nations compete in teams of six for the event, which promises a full family day out with an interactive retail village and the opportunity to get up close to watch the stars in action.

Thousands of golf fans and celebrity spotters flocked to Celtic Manor in the sunshine last summer to watch the action.

As well as top-notch golfing action and on and off-course banter, there will be Q&A interviews with other sports stars and live music in the tented village.

Visitors can also experience the VIP treatment in hospitality or the Premier Lounge, and join the celebs for a glittering gala dinner on the Saturday evening.
